Have you ever held a major league bat? They’re heavy. Thick. They kind of have to be – they’re built to hit balls made of cork and rubber. They can’t be breaking easily. And for the most part, they don’t…

Well, until Bo Jackson gets a hold of one.

The date was June 21, 1989. Brewers and Royals. Jay Aldrich was on the mound for the Brewers. He fired a pitch to Bo who broke his bat and hit a weak comebacker to Aldrich. Aldrich tossed the ball to first and the inning was over.

But the fireworks were just beginning. On his way back to the dugout, a frustrated Bo lifted his bat atop his helmet, pulled it down, and snapped it in two.

That’s right: Bo Jackson broke a bat over his head!

If we would’ve tried something like that we’d been laid up in the hospital for a week. But this is Bo Jackson we’re talking about. Breaking bats was sort of his thing. I mean, they even made a bobblehead of it.

But that’s why we will forever love Bo Jackson. He not only wowed us with his athletic ability, he also gave us unforgettable moments like this. Let’s just hope he had Louisville Slugger on speed dial.
