Managers in today's game are a different breed. Rarely will you see a true meltdown on the field. It's frowned upon so much for a manager to demonstrably fight for their team. That wasn't the case for most of baseball history. There were managers that would literally fight for what they thought was right.

Let's take a look at some historic managers who brought the energy when they came out onto the field. Just so you know, there is no order to this list, just a collection of moments that are worth mentioning.
12. Earl Weaver’s Mic’d Up Meltdown with Bill Haller (1980)
If you ever wanted to hear what managers back in the day would say to umpires, this is as great an example as you're gonna get. Earl Weaver is one of the greatest managers the game has ever seen. So he has certainly had his fair share of run-ins with umpires. The crowd was a little sparse at that stadium, but if you listen, you'll hear them cheer like there are thousands more at the park.
11. Lou Piniella’s Base-Throwing Tirade
Of all the fiery attitudes in baseball history, Lou Piniella is right up there with the fieriest (yes, that's a word; I looked it up). Props are encouraged in any performance. Lou was never shy to use them. He even showed his strength and athleticism in throwing the base in this protest. If you ask players on the team, I'm sure they'd say they got used to it. So, in this case, I'm guessing the dugout just found it funny and a good way to reset.
10. Billy Martin’s Dirt-Kicking Classic (1983)
I think the way that George Steinbrenner owned the Yankees in the 80s is quite similar to how Billy Martin managed the team. There were very high highs and very low lows. Martin had his fair share of showing the umpires what he thought. I'm sure he was a manager who wanted to see his players get dirty, so he didn't mind getting the umpires dirty as well.
9. Bobby Cox’s Record-Breaking 158th Ejection (2007)
The Hall of Famer Bobby Cox managed to his heart's content. He was sure to give the fans their money's worth on a monthly basis. This ejection basically illustrates the statistical average of one ejection per month that Cox was able to achieve. I never really knew him as a temperamental person either. I think he did every one of those ejections in his own style. You almost gotta respect and honor the number of ejections that he racked up in his amazing career.
8. Lloyd McClendon’s Base Stealing Show (2001)
Lloyd McClendon didn't have the longest or most successful managerial career, but he made his mark with this memorable tirade. As I said before, props are always encouraged. McClendon saw an opportunity, and he took it… literally. This is one of those managerial outbursts that I like to go back and watch every once in a while.
7. Tommy Lasorda’s Phanatic Attack (1988)
Remember when I talked about managers fighting for their team at the top of this article? Here is a literal fight that involved legendary Dodger manager Tommy Lasorda. He was not amused by the antics of the equally legendary, if not more, Philly Phanatic. It remains the funniest, most light-hearted baseball clip involving a manager in history. The only thing is, I'm pretty sure that Tommy Lasorda doesn't think the clip is light-hearted himself.
6. Hal McRae’s Reporter Room Rampage (1993)
Having done work in the press, I find this video scary. It is usually understood by coaches and reporters that each have an equally important job to do during press conferences. Reporters may ask questions that coaches hate, but they are looking for quotes that will interest their readers.
A coach, or in this case a manager, needs to remain professional and answer the questions in the way they want to answer them. All that said, this is still as memorable of a manager moment as any in history.
5. Don Zimmer’s Umpire Blowout (1989)
Don Zimmer is a baseball lifer. There is no doubt about it. The number of players and people in general that he touched in his career is countless. He had a passion for the game that was almost unmatched. You can see all of that passion in this argument with a home plate umpire who wanted to get just as passionate in the end. This escalated to a point where it got everybody in the stadium on their feet.
4. Lee Elia’s Famous Cubs Rant (1983)
Chicago is one of the great cities in America, so it's no surprise that when their people are targeted in a monologue from a sports person at one of their hometown teams, you can bet they will remember it forever. This rant lives on in infamy in the city of Chicago forever. Elia did not last much longer in his position after this, but the words in this speech sure have.
3. Ozzie Guillen’s “Six-Game Streak” Explosion (2008)
There are a number of Ozzie Guillen outbursts that you can point to as a defining moment in his managerial career. He was just full of them, and he knew it. Ever since he retired, he can be seen in the media covering his beloved White Sox. It's kind of funny that he included the media in this rant, criticizing the industry that he ended up joining.
2. Joe Maddon’s “Umpire Ejection” Show (2011)
Joe Maddon is one of the more beloved managers in baseball history. That's in a general sense. Most of the time, he is a great guy, but when he got into it with an umpire, he would really get into it. This one got to a point where he rejected the thought of being ejected and instead took the responsibility to eject the umpire. From far away, it is really fun for a fan. I'm sure on the field, though, it was a lot more tense.
1. Ron Gardenhire’s Finale (2014)
Ron Gardenhire wasn't actually that argumentative over his managerial career. That's why his ejections are so notable. To get him going, it needed to be a call he was truly passionate about. This one was a culmination of his up-and-down tenure with the Twins. As we celebrate Ron Gardenhire's ejection in his final season, we also celebrate the rest of this list of manager moments that we remember even to this day.
